For the past 43 years, the Chicago River has been turned green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Did you know that this is done with a dye used to test leaks? Apparently, the dye is orange at first and for a few moments you would probably ask "What have they done!?", but then turns a perfect shade of "Irish" green. There may be unique qualities to that particular river also, because other cities have tried and not succeeded in doing something similar.

SK Tools has been around since the beginning of the 20th century and quickly became a leader in providing and manufacturing unique and standard hand tools. With their patented "round-head" ratchet, SK created one of the most popular ratchet designs that spanned across numerous other lines.

Who really knows what happened to a company that seemed unstoppable, but last Summer, they declared bankruptcy. Although some of their items were still lingering around warehouses across the country, with little or no guarantee of warranties being honored, most distibutors stopped selling these items all together.

For most consumers, the future of this company and all the wonderful tools they had created, was up in the air. Sk has since then been purchased by Ideal Industries and word on the street is things are to be up and running within the next 2 months.

Taking over a company and all its possible messes can be pretty ugly. Who knows what will happen to the long term future of SK/Ideal. I know my fingers are crossed for only good things.

Using a Double Flaring Tool

1. Use a tubing cutter and cut the tubing to the desired length. We recommend this Flaring Tool Set . Remove any burrs on the cut end of the tube. Slide the tubing nut on the tube, hex end first.

2. Loosen the wing nuts and insert the tube in the appropriate opening of the tubing clamp. Place the correct sized adapter upside down beside the protruding end of the tube. Allow the end of the tubing to protrude from the tube to match the thickness of the large part of the adapter. Tighten the wing nuts tightly. Keep the halves of the tool parallel to each other as you tighten.
3. Turn the adapter over , coat with a small amount of brake fluid and insert into the tube.
4. Place the flaring tool on the tubing clamp, making sure the screw point is centered on the adapter and the flaring tool is locked on the tubing clamp. Turn the screw clockwise until the adapter bottoms out of the tubing clamp. Final tightening is easier if you clamp the tool in a vise if you have one.

5. Loosen the screw and remove the adapter. The tubing end should have a bubble look at this point.

6. Position the flaring tool with the point entering the tubing end and centered. Turn the screw clockwise and tighten until the cone is bottomed out completely.

7. Remove the flaring tool and inspect the tubing end. The flare should be even all around with no cracks or gaps. Remove the tubing from the clamp.

Basic Shop Tools

Many are just setting up shops and have no basic shop equipment.

This list covers very basic shop equipment and we will add some additional shop tools to consider in the next post.

Air Compressors - One of the most essential shop tools that will power all the air power tool equipment in your shop. Make sure you get a large enough air compressor to serve the needs of the shop and the jobs you are doing.

Should you choose to equip a Field Service Shop Truck, consider a Portable Compressor.

Along with that Compressor, you need a Blow Gun to handle general cleaning and dusting duties, and might want to get a Pocket Blow Gun to clean small crevaces or have longer reach to get to hard to reach areas.

For a great general purpose Blowgun Set with Assorted Tips, consider the Acme Automotive Blow Gun Kit.

You will also need hose to connect your Air Tools, so choose a hose that will cover the area you need to reach in your shop.

Most shops will need an Air Wrench Set. This set from Ingersol Rand is in the popular 1/2 inch size and capable of handling most light to medium duty shop needs.

In an earlier post, we mentioned Shop Safety - so get a First Aid Kit!

A Portable Shop Light is a must have and will come in very handy for many situations.

Funny video (at least I thought it was funny) reminding us of all the unsafe conditions that can be waiting in our shops, warehouses, and factories.

Shop accidents are an ever present reality and proper First Aid Equipment and basic First Aid Training are things every employee needs to have.

Eye Wash Stations are critical anywhere splash and spill hazards are a possibility, and a well stocked Professional First Aid Kit is a must have for every location.

Keep emergency numbers handy in case you need more than simple First Aid.

Many local agencies offer First Aid Training at low or no cost.

Call your local City or Country to learn more.

Cam Shaft Installation, Installing a Camshaft, Cam Shaft Video

Installing a camshaft is a obviously a major automotive repair job as it requires engine removal with a hoist or lift, and engine tear down.

The video points out the essential need for camshaft lubrication and proper handling of the camshaft.

Most engine rebuild shops will have a engine stand for easy access, yet we have seen home made engine stands made with 2x4's (not recommended)!

Notice the disposable latex gloves the auto tech is wearing in the video. The gloves protect both the camshaft from oils that could cause damage, and also keep the hands of the technician clean.

Anytime you have your engine out for this size repair, take advantage of the opportunity to hone the cylinders and check all critical fit areas for proper tolerances and evidence of wear.

AC Vacuum Pump Primer
